The idea of revoking citizenship has a long history in the United States, dating back to the American Revolution. Even President John Adams sought to revoke citizenship under the Alien and Sedition Acts, which led to the formation of oppositional political parties. In Adams case, it was his tyranny over citizenship that led Jefferson to establish the Democratic Republicans, known as the Democratic Party today.
